Ph 101 Philosophy of the Human Person 1
This course, as part of the Philosophy Core Curriculum, is an introduction to philosophy, but with a specific emphasis upon our being and becoming human. As the first of the four core courses in philosophy, it will initiate the student into the act of philosophizing, into a life of wonder and reflection. Beginning with the question: “What does it mean to philosophize?” it aims to help the student cultivate the philosophical rigor of reflective and critical thinking in an attempt to answer the question: “Who am I?” In this quest of self-understanding, we will delve into what it means to be and become human in various dimensions: embodied subjectivity, historicity, and work. We shall discover in this course that philosophical reflection does not subsist of itself but is born of and grounded in experience. As such, we will participate in the Junior Engagement Program (JEEP) to help us root our reflections in concrete experience of work, while at the same time drawing upon our experiences of the JEEP to enrich our ongoing process of reflection upon the question of our being and becoming human persons.
