Ph 155.1 Daoism and Zen Buddhism
This course explores two Asian philosophical traditions that have influenced much of the thinking and way of life in China and Japan, and even beyond. The first part of the course, on Daoism, is an invitation to delve into the ancient question of the meaning of dao (道), through a study of two texts of Daoist Philosophy – Daodejing (道德經) and Zhuangzi (莊子). Hopefully, this sojourn into dao will open the way for an appreciation of a manner of being human as weiziran (為自然). The second part of the course, on Zen Buddhism, is an exploration of a primordial engagement of reality through non-duality in thought and action. Through a survey and study of various accounts and texts from Theravada Buddhism and early Mahayana Buddhism to Zen Buddhism, this part hopes to bring to light a notion of being and being-human as nothing, mu (無).
